KINGFISHER Health and Fitness Centre is home to a host of fully qualified tutors and fitness instructors including a former captain of the Irish women’s soccer team holding 32 caps for Ireland.
Despite her youthful appearance Yvonne Lyons, who earned an impressive 20 caps as captain, is one of the more experienced fitness instructors in Kingfisher Health and Fitness Centre. She says her maturity and her energetic attitude is something that appeals to a lot of the members.
The fitness instructor and personal trainer, who has worked with Kingfisher for the past four years, also sees herself as something as a role model due to her high level of fitness. In all Yvonne holds 10 fitness classes per week, including body sculpt, weights and conditioning, aqua aerobics, bums, legs and tums and body solid classes.
If that was not exhausting enough she also holds cardio toning classes and spin classes.
“All of my classes are energetic. I need just as much energy as the people that come to the classes. The classes are very popular especially for people who need motivation to work out,”
It is Yvonne’s job to get people moving, but she added everyone in the classes spur each other on. “In my opinion exercise classes are the best form of exercise and are the way to go for most people,” she added.
Many people feel intimidated when they first join a gym, but the staff will show the new member the ropes and also give them a programme to follow, so they will hit their targets. She said classes can be beneficial in the same way as the instructor will take the newcomer under their wing until they are comfortable enough to go it alone.
Like all the other instructors Yvonne is fully qualified and holds NCEF certification. She is also qualified in the areas of general exercise and fitness and is a personal trainer and swim instructor. Yvonne always had a love of sport. She began her impressive soccer career with Benfica before becoming an international soccer player for Ireland.
She has been nominated for player of the year five times, winning the coveted title twice. However, she also juggled a 20-year career in Bausch + Lomb’s finance department before turning to the fitness industry full-time. She started out with just one class and is now up to 10 a week. Yvonne loves welcoming new members and showing them the ropes when they join her classes.
